Are you passionate about combating air pollution and eager to create innovative solutions for a cleaner, more sustainable world?

If your academic ambitions include making a real impact in environmental protection and advancing the science of pollution control, this opportunity at one of Canada’s leading research institutions could be the next step in your career.

Research Topic and Significance

The PhD project focuses on the design, characterization, and testing of adsorbent materials derived from activated industrial ashes—potentially enhanced with enzymes or microorganisms—to capture atmospheric pollutants produced by combustion processes.

As the global community pushes for an energy transition, biomass is increasingly used as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, particularly in residential heating.

Simultaneously, the incineration of municipal and industrial waste remains a prevalent method for managing non-recyclable materials.

Both processes, however, emit hazardous pollutants such as dioxins, furans, PAHs, and fine particulate matter, posing significant risks to public health and the environment.

Project Details

Responsibilities

  • Synthesis and activation of adsorbent materials from fly ash and inorganic residues
  • Functionalization of materials to enhance pollutant capture
  • Conducting sorption studies targeting specific atmospheric pollutants
  • Validating the adsorption process using both column and pilot-scale setups
  • Analyzing sorbent stability, regeneration, and long-term performance
  • Contributing to scientific publications and participating in conferences

The project offers access to advanced research infrastructure and the possibility of internships in practical, real-world settings, providing a comprehensive and applied research experience.
