About Glencore Capital Projects Group (CPG)

The Capital Projects Group (CPG) is Glencore’s dedicated organisation for developing and delivering selected major capital projects across its global Commodity Departments.

Working within the Life of Asset (LOA) management process, CPG typically begins supporting selected major projects post concept development when a project advances to the pre-feasibility stage (PFS entry).

By collaborating with the respective Commodity Department and regional team, CPG shapes, develops and executes major projects from PFS onwards, into Feasibility and then Execution and handover, deploying organisation capability and project management expertise to achieve targeted outcomes safely and with predictable capital productivity.

Operating with agility and deep expertise, CPG collaborates with each Commodity Department to develop fit-for-purpose delivery models that leverage regional capabilities and skills for each project it supports or is accountable for.

Manager, Project Integration - Studies (El Pachón Project)

Division: Capital Projects Group

Location: Santiago, Chile / San Juan, Argentina

Reports to: Project Director

Qualifications

  • College/University Education: Relevant tertiary qualifications required, preferably in Technical (Engineering) or Business major
  • Business capabilities: Well developed computer literacy, specifically MS Office suite and project related tools (scheduling, cost control, risk and opportunity management etc.)

Main objective of the Job

To provide leadership and coordination within a project team during PFS and FS stages to enable value creation through key trade-off decisions and optimization of the project, configurations, mine plans, construction and commissioning execution plans, including enabling works, together with integration of project permitting to be fully developed, culminating in a syndicated and coherent business case that maximizes value between Glencore and related stakeholders.

Operating context

The work of this role may begin in late Concept stage and endure to the end of the Feasibility stage.

Integration activities during construction require a different skill set and focus (reference alternative role description for construction stage).

Experience & Skills

  • Proven significant experience in leading the planning and implementation of multidisciplinary capital projects in the mining and metals industry – minimum of 10 years of experience at senior levels of project leadership, up to and including senior project engineer, or project manager, ideally complemented with operational and broader mining and minerals experience
  • Significant experience in developing and optimising project financial evaluations
  • Strong strategic business and financial acumen balanced with a strong understanding of risk and uncertainty management
  • Proven ability to hold ambiguity and complexity and to break down problems into discrete, logical and iterative steps that enable project teams to navigate through complex issues, typically encountered in PFS and in brownfield projects or other complex delivery environments
  • In-depth experience applying capital project management methodologies, such as project shaping and framing, asset planning and project economic evaluation models combined with clear thinking and effective written and verbal communication skills essential to achieve technical and schedule integration
  • Highly developed team-leadership, organization, sensory and communication skills, solution and value focused with an ability to drive towards and hold ambitious schedule targets, leading on occasion as needed in key areas of uncertainty
  • Ideally, demonstrable experience in working within and leading diverse and integrated teams, creating collaborative delivery environments that recognize disruptive thinking with decision making primarily based on maximizing sources of value
  • Ability to visualize, describe and communicate complex and ambiguous multidisciplinary issues to senior management while being able to develop and offer proposed pathways to unlock these through collaboration with project and external resources

Key Accountabilities

  • Creates and maintains continuous alignment of project scope with business objectives via a project reference case of scope, CAPEX, OPEX and key assumptions and clearly articulated trade off decisions, adjusting the reference case via Management of Change once clear alignment and syndicated endorsement of recommendations or reference case adjustment has been achieved / received
  • Provides deep technical and commercial integration through implementation of a structured and rigorous problem-solving methodology that delivers syndicated solutions to project critical issues while maximizing value
  • Effectively manages project integration by leading and continuously collaborating and influencing project disciplines in prioritizing and performing trade-off studies and documenting conclusions and recommendations for endorsement
  • Guides and supports all activity related to configuration, trade-off decisions and reference case CAPEX, OPEX, schedule and all other inputs required for project economic evaluation models
  • Facilitates project integration meetings, internally and with customer commodity department asset teams, driving aligned progress, leading key workstreams as required and as requested
  • Ensures that project integration is consistent with and informs LOAs
  • Prepares and presents syndicated recommendations to Project Steering Groups, together with Project Manager / Director as applicable
  • Typically, deputises for the Project Manager or Project Director during PFS and early FS activity
